Sara Bologna is a designer, design consultant and researcher based in Milan (b.1996). She is also co-founder of BGGB studio, a collaborative practice initiated together with Luca Gruber.
Focusing on the anthropological and intangible aspects of material culture, she conceives artifacts as narrative mediums that can surface alternate sets of values, to steer systemic change. Her practice understands design as a world-making activity that translates values and ideals into material experiences and artifacts, in particular through the rediscovery of rituality and the valorization of artisanal production, grounded in situated knowledge and practices.
Her imagery is permeated with rituals, symbols, graffiti from the creases of pre-history, fragments of poems, and grimoires. All these inspirations are deconstructed and reconstructed based on iconographic, semantic and historical insight, and turned into objects through a narrative-driven approach.
She curates design-related projects with attention to the cross-contamination of the discipline with craftsmanship and contemporary arts.
Her Atanor vase was exhibited at the ADI Design Museum in Milan (2025) and included in the design selection curated by Domitilla Dardi for the iconic Milanese concept store and gallery 10CorsoComo (2024). She collaborates with social enterprises such as Nuova Libbaneria Mediterranea (Maratea, PZ) and MitiMeth (Lagos, NG) for developing collections that honour craft heritage while empowering local communities.
Her project Tenacissimae is selected by the Permanent Observatory of Design of ADI (Associazione Disegno Industriale) to be included in the ADI Design Index 2024 - Compasso d'Oro selection. She is shortlisted by AD Spain as an emerging creative talent (2024) and appointed by Exibart among the 222 emerging artists to invest in (2025).
She is part of co/rizom - a research-based project for design-led innovation of crafts, and of MADEC, PoliMi's research center for material design culture, as a consultant and designer. She lectures in several universities, including Politecnico di Milano, IULM, and Unidee Fondazione Pistoletto. She is a teaching assistant and research collaborator at Politecnico di Milano and co-coordinator of the Master's Program in Traditional Furniture Design delivered at WRTH - The Royal Institute of Traditional Arts of Saudi Arabia (Riyadh, SA).
